In São Luis, the beautiful hostel where I stayed is for sale. The ceilings are high, the walls are stone, the light is abundant, the furniture is tasteful. By looking at the place, you can tell it renovated recently with tender attention to detail. The place has capacity for about 40 people.
The fact that the place is for sale explains why the staff were not at all pleasant...
São Luis is growing as a tourist destination, not just a stop on the gringo trail coming from Amazonia going to the northeast coast as it is now. With an internet cafe, a cafe and restaurant, and a travel agency, the place has A LOT of potential.
